Learn about the foundations of seed cleaning in this practical, 90-minute webinar. Whether you’re processing small batches for on-farm use or scaling up for commercial production, understanding seed cleaning is essential for seed quality and efficiency. This session will introduce the key principles of cleaning both wet- and dry-processed seeds, including threshing, winnowing, screening and fermenting, drying, and storage. Presenters will share hands-on experience with crop-specific methods. Participants will gain insight into how to improve seed quality, reduce labor, and develop processes that fit their farm’s size and production goals.
About the Presenters
Jared Zystro of Organic Seed Alliance
Jared Zystro is Research and Education Director at Organic Seed Alliance, where he leads projects in seed production, participatory breeding, and variety trials. With over 15 years of experience in the organic seed industry and a Ph.D. in plant breeding and genetics, he teaches farmers about seed production and plant breeding through workshops, conferences, and field days.
Katie Jagger of Organic Seed Alliance and Saltwater Seeds
Katie Jagger co-owns Saltwater Seeds, a certified organic seed company producing and selling maritime adapted seeds and also assists with field research at Organic Seed Alliance. She lives and farms in Sequim, Washington.
Crystal Stewart-Courtens of Cornell University Extension and Philia Farms
Crystal Stewart-Courtens is a vegetable specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension, providing research-based guidance to growers in an 18 county region of Eastern New York. She co-owns Philia Farm, a certified organic diversified vegetable and seed farm in Johnstown, NY.
Kayla Ierlan of Organic Seed Alliance and Honey Bloom Farm
Kayla Ierlan is the farm manager at Organic Seed Alliance’s research farm in Chimacum, Washington, with over eight years of professional experience as a commercial seed grower. She also operates Honey Bloom Farm, an organic seed farm, and is passionate about connecting others to seed work and supporting fellow seed growers.
